Amikacin injection 100mg, 125mg, 250mg, 500mg.

It is the widest antibacterial among the aminoglycosides. It has resistance to the enzymes that inactivate aminoglycosides. It is derived from Kanamycin.

Route – It is given by injection through intramuscular route and intravenous route.

Dose :–

In adults: Amikacin 15 mg. per kilogram daily, in two equal divided doses, for 10 days.

In children: Amikacin 15 mg per kilogram daily, in three divided doses, every 8 hours.

Indications –Amikacin injection, Respiratory Tract Infection, Bone and Joints Infection, Meningitis, Central Nervous System Infection, Skin and Soft Tissue Infection, Intra-abdominal Infection, Peritonitis, Burns, Post Operative Infection, Bacteria, Septicemia.

Contraindications – Hypersensitivity, Pregnancy, Ear drum perforation, Severe myasthenia gravis.

Interactions – Similar to gentamicin or similar to streptomycin.

Adverse effects/Side effects – Hypersensitivity reaction, nausea, vomiting, nephrotoxicity, ototoxicity, head-ache, vertigo, ataxia, neuro-muscular blockade.
